— Revolutionizing Design Efficiency at NinjaCat

Background:

As a seasoned product designer with a decade-long track record, I was entrusted with the significant task of developing and managing a robust design system for NinjaCat, an industry-leading marketing analytics platform. My journey encompassed not only the creation of a cohesive design language but also ensuring it adhered to the highest accessibility standards and facilitated a seamless team transition to a more collaborative design tool.

Challenge:

NinjaCat's existing design framework was fragmented, leading to inconsistencies across the product. The accessibility of the platform was not up to par with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), potentially alienating users with disabilities. Additionally, the design, engineering, and QA teams were siloed, utilizing Sketch, which hindered real-time collaboration and efficiency.

Strategy:

The strategy was multi-fold: develop a comprehensive design system, execute a full accessibility audit and update, and migrate the team to Figma for enhanced collaboration. To ensure the successful adoption of these initiatives, I introduced new processes and training programs.

Execution:

Design System Development:

  • Conducted extensive research to understand user needs and establish a design language that resonated with NinjaCat's brand ethos.

  • Built out a scalable and flexible design system, documenting UI components, patterns, and usage guidelines to ensure consistency and speed up the design process.

Accessibility Sweep:

  • Performed a detailed accessibility audit against WCAG standards.

  • Updated all colours, typography, and interaction patterns to ensure the product was fully accessible, improving the user experience for individuals with disabilities.

Transition from Sketch to Figma:

  • Led the migration from Sketch to Figma, curating a suite of resources and tailored training sessions for the design, engineering, and QA teams.

  • Fostered a culture of open communication and continuous learning to ease the transition.

Training and Process Implementation:

  • Implemented a series of workshops and documentation to bring all team members up to speed with the new design system and accessibility standards.

  • Established regular design reviews and a cross-disciplinary feedback loop, integrating design, engineering, and QA insights early in the design process.

Outcomes:

  • Enhanced Product Consistency: The design system served as a single source of truth, significantly reducing design inconsistencies and speeding up the product development lifecycle.

  • Improved Accessibility: The comprehensive accessibility overhaul ensured compliance with WCAG standards, making NinjaCat more inclusive and expanding its market reach.

  • Elevated Team Efficiency: The transition to Figma revolutionized the collaborative workflow, leading to a 30% reduction in design handoff times and a marked increase in product iteration speed.

  • Process Optimization: New processes reduced cross-functional misalignments and fostered a proactive environment for quality assurance and innovation.

Conclusion:

The strategic overhaul of NinjaCat's design infrastructure under my leadership was a transformative process that not only elevated the product's design coherence and accessibility but also cultivated a more efficient and collaborative team dynamic. By embedding new processes and a culture of continuous improvement, NinjaCat set a new standard for excellence in digital product design.
